DIY FlashingsDIY Flashing’s generally are shaped or bent sheet metals incorporated other materials to deter moisture or even heat at times. But these mostly hidden DIY home owner gems, believe it or not, if installed correctly are one of the best insurance policies your home can’t do without. Roof to wall, z-bar, weep screed, stucco stop, hoods, caps, roof edge, drip edge some of the common metal names used in the industry. Then there is all the rain gutter components, down spouts, elbow’s and several type’s of scuppers. Rain gutters can be one of the most simplest approaches to diverting excess water from areas that have no need to be getting overly wet. IE (driveways and patio covers) with a gutter install this moisture can be pushed to the grass or garden. Attic vents and attic fans help keep the area above the ceiling from over heating and increase the ability to heat and cool the home, thus saving on utility bills with better attic ventilation. Also types of DIY flashing’s known as fiberglass, oil soaked, and simply sislecraft paper or pre-wrap around the typical door and window openings. Many leaks are caused by improper applications of these very important home construction phases. Water or moisture flows down hill and the only way flashing of any type can do it’s job is to have been installed from the lowest point of succession, the first piece will go down then # two has to lap accordingly over the first piece, and so on and so forth. Understanding this process is paramount, paper or sometimes known as the moisture barrier needs this same application method to insure a leak proof DIY flashing project. Even the pros get it wrong but the paper applied right can and will keep water out only the sun’s UV rays break it down over time so it requires coverage, IE stucco, siding, roofing materials etc. We can use some types of sealants often enough unless the gaps, breaks, tears or cracks exceed 1/4″ or more this is a recurring headache in the long run. Geocel is a brand we use and trust and Dap industries has several products as well.So just a little more insight on the subject here, Good luck and happy DIY Home Improving! |
